History Of Serendipity

Serendipity OBX is a historic beach cottage on the beach road, full of history and charm, and has been a favorite vacation spot for familities for over 20 years.

The Early Years:  Serendipity was built in the 1930s and was located on the Kitty Hawk oceanfront beside Life Saving Station #7. It served as the living quarters for the station keeper and other personnel until the Life Saving Station was taken out of service. For many years it was simply known as "The Station Keeper's House".

For a while, the Life Saving Station itself remained on the oceanfront but, due to the restless Atlantic, it was moved in 1933 to around milepost 5 on the beach road.  Serendipity was built in the 1930s and was located on the Kitty Hawk oceanfront beside Life Saving Station #7. The Sage Years:  In December 1990, Kate, George, and Laurie Sage (many of the summer renters know them) bought the house on a whim and rented it for the first time in the summer of 1991. It was named "Sage Haven" to reflect its service as a safe haven away from everyday life for the Sages!

With that first rental year came the first major storm of the Sage family’s ownership - this storm was referred to as The Halloween Storm of 1991. This is also the same storm made famous in the movie The Perfect Storm starring George Clooney (and also available to watch on DVD if you stay at Serendipity!). During the Halloween Storm, the wild Atlantic Ocean apparently also wanted to enjoy Sage Haven and, as Mr. Sage told us, "It came through the house".

After the Halloween storm, the Sage family decided to have the house elevated so that future storms would go under the house rather than through it! There are pictures of the damage to the house and to the Kitty Hawk area in the History of Serendipity binder in the house. The short pilings that were previously mentioned can still seen under the house as a reminder of the Halloween storm, and where Serendipity used to once sit. After that storm, the Sages realized that fate, faith, and a lot of luck played into the fact that the house was not floating off to sea. They then changed its name to Serendipity in late 1991.

2017 And The Future:  And serendipity it was for us as well, so we could never think about changing her name. She came into our lives by surprise in April 2017, and we knew from our first look that we would be very happy here. Nicole tells the story of how she burst into tears upon opening the door into the house for the very first time. That really did happen!

Since purchasing the cottage, Mike and Nicole have made some small changes, but always with keeping the history and charm of Serendipity and the Outer Banks in mind.  Some of the changes include new cedar siding, spruced up outdoor shower, new captain's ladder, newly painted rooms, more books, more DVDs, new outdoor furniture, some new beach decor, new outdoor grill, new cedar shakes, and many other little changes.

Serendipity has persevered through the years, enduring the battering storms and the untamed ocean of the Outer Banks. She stands strongly and proudly, undoubtedly earning her place in Outer Banks history. We hope she remains for our lifetime...and we believe she surely will.
